After three years of boxing, Sifu Jacques began his martial arts training in 1987 mainly in the Leong Cheung Family system of Shaolin Lin Wan Kuen Wing Chun Kung Fu and Various Weaponry at the Shaolin Martial Arts Centre. Serving in the South African Army from August 1988 to March 1990, he was exposed to a variety of fighting methods, including Wrestling, Boxing, Kickboxing, Hung Gar Kung Fu, Choy Lai Fut Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do and various Karate styles. After completion of his basic military training, he resumed his training at the Shaolin Martial Arts Centre in January 1989 and in 1994 reached the level of Instructor under Grandmaster Leo Sebregts, and taught the Leong Cheung Family system commercially for 4 years.

At the end of 1997, Sifu Jacques felt that to further his understanding of a complete Martial Artist, searched for a Kung Fu Combat art that can compliment what he has learnt and began training in Shaolin Temple Kung Fu, Sanshou kickboxing and the combat techniques of Kung Fu San Soo under Master James Rossouw, and once again reached the level of Assistant-Instructor in July 2002. For the following year he endured various grading intervals, including Sanshou kickboxing, San Soo Kung Fu Techiques and Shaolin Temple Kung Fu, and in August 2003 received the honour of Sifu and was formally introduced to Master Shi Yang Qi from the Shaolin Temple, China.

Under the enduring guidance and mentorship of Master Shi Yang Qi, Sifu Jacques subsequently in June 2006 received international Sifu certification and appointed as Assistant Vice President for the China International General Association of Shoalin Temple Disciples in South Africa. Sifu Jacques was also honoured with the Shaolin name of Shi Miao Paau.

To further his expertise and technical know-how of the diverse lineages of Authentic Wing Chun Kung Fu, Sifu Jacques in 2004 commenced his studies in the Liang Ting Wing Chun Kuen system, as he believes that one should never stop to learn and that it would be a proficient extension to his current knowledge and expertise.
