Siu-Lam Kung Fu
Northern Siu-Lam Martial Arts are composed of quick alterations between extended postures like the horse, bow, drop, crane and dragon stances and preference is given to jumps, high kicks, and acrobatics that are largely absent from the Southern Siu-Lam Martial Arts, which are composed of persistent hand techniques delivered from firmly rooted stances.
It is believed that the distinction between Northern and Southern is due in part to geography. The Northern terrain was considered open and flat to accommodate long range techniques, quick advances and retreats, wide stances, jump kicks and leaping techniques, whirling circular blocks, quickness, agility, and aggressive attacks, which are mostly directed to the mid and upper gates of the body. The Southern terrain was considered to be rocky and the emphasis is more on hand techniques and kicks to the groin and lower gate of the body.
